Continuously Effective Altruism
A better way to reach equitable outcomes by applying a highly successful software principle
Continuously Effective Altruism
As a curious individual I have studied numerous communities in my short time.
One of the online communities that struck out as highly interesting and worth practising a little bit of anthropology in is the LessWrong community.
Or as I would like to describe them (from my observations) as the MoreWrong
Who are the LessWrong proponents?
Folk such as Eliezer Yudkowsky
TLDR? He's a questionable man who has designed his own personal philosophy that essentially excuses himself from the occasional deviant behavour (not going to cover details here)
I once upon a time was a LessWrong'er too. Until it became abundantly clear that where the entire goal of the society was to be Less Wrong in ones thinking what it devulged into was a specific set of ideologies.
Yes, the Less Wrong'ers - The good samaritans of being... Less Wrong - became victim to the same human behaviour that causes distrust at societal scales. Namely, confirming ones own bias - aka becoming ideological.
Who are the effective altruists?
Sam Bankman-Fried is probably the most famous self proclaimed effective altruist today.
Although unfortuntaly he seems to me more effective as a capitalist than a pilanthropist.. go figure!
....okay...
Let's assume the best of Sam's intentions, he is redistributing wealth for good reason!
Well that might be a better argument if the wealth he is accumulating came from the rich capitalist pigs but in fact his flashbots and MEV front running contracts are taking money from retail investors. This is beginning to sound like the same story of wealth accumulation we always hear, correct?
Each and every day his Alameda Research team extracts hundreds of thousands of US dollars from retail investors, the very same people Sam is trying to save from the big bad man...
Now there is nothing wrong with effective trading strategies, but there is an opportunity missed each and every single day I will detail below.
Proposing a better core model - taking inspiration from modern Software Development methodologies
Continuously Effective Altruism is the process of continuously applying altruist methodologies to everything one does.
It is not, make a bunch of money and then figure out what to do with it later.
It is about delegating a portion of ones profits to pilanthropic activies. It is something many companies are doing today already!
It is about building a business pipeline in such as way that is can effectively and continuously controbute to social goods and social causes.
What is the key difference?
The key difference is that altruistic outcomes must be acheived on a daily and as-regular-as-possible-basis.
This can include
- Donating portions of revenue to charity
- Reducing cost of delivering goods and services
- Making pilanthropic motivations a core tenet of the business philisophy
- Unlicensing patents
